The Challenge

A property management company in Sharjah was expanding its office security system and phone infrastructure simultaneously. They needed to install 16 IP cameras across the office floor and a reception area, plus 20 IP desk phones to replace an aging PSTN system. The challenge was that budget and timeline did not allow for running separate 230V power cables to each device — the contractor had already completed the office fit-out, and routing new power conduits would require significant wall work. The client needed a way to power all 36 devices from the existing Cat6 cabling infrastructure.

The Solution

Netbiz Technology calculated the PoE load: 16 cameras at 10W average = 160W; 20 phones at 4W average = 80W; total = 240W peak. Two Huawei eKit S310-24P4S switches were supplied, each with 370W PoE budget — providing total headroom of 740W against a 240W load, with significant room for future additions. Cameras were distributed across dedicated ports on Switch 1 (tagged VLAN 30), phones across Switch 2 ports (tagged VLAN 20 with QoS DSCP EF marking). Both switches connect uplink to a core distribution switch handling internet routing.

Network Design Overview

Switch 1 (CCTV): S310-24P4S — ports 1–16 assigned to CCTV VLAN 30. Cameras powered at 7–12W per port. NVR connected on an untagged management port. VLAN 30 has no routing to VLAN 10 (data) or VLAN 20 (voice).

Switch 2 (Voice + Data): S310-24P4S — ports 1–20 serving VoIP phones on VLAN 20 with DSCP EF QoS. Remaining ports serve staff PCs on VLAN 10.

PoE budget (Switch 1): 16 cameras at 10W avg = 160W peak against 370W budget. 57% utilisation.

PoE budget (Switch 2): 20 phones at 4W avg = 80W peak against 370W budget. 22% utilisation.

Uplink: Both switches uplink to existing core switch via 1G ports. Inter-VLAN routing handled at core.
