Seamless WiFi Roaming for Enterprise UAE Networks

WiFi roaming fails not because of the APs but because of the clients. Devices are designed to stay connected to an AP as long as possible — even when a closer AP would provide a stronger signal. In a UAE hotel, a guest walking from their room to the lobby may remain connected to the room AP at -80 dBm (one bar) when a lobby AP at -40 dBm (full bars) is five metres away. The solution is a combination of controller-side policies and standards-based protocols that force rational roaming decisions.

Why Devices Do Not Roam Automatically

The 802.11 standard gives clients — not APs — the decision to roam. An AP cannot forcibly disconnect a client that is still associated; it can only send a de-authentication frame or a BSS Transition Management Request as a suggestion. Many clients, particularly older Android devices and IoT hardware, ignore both.

The reason clients are conservative about roaming is that roaming has a cost: a reassociation event (the handshake between client and new AP) traditionally takes 50–200ms during which no data flows. For a voice call, that is an audible glitch. For a video stream, a brief buffer. Clients therefore wait until the current AP becomes unusable before making the switch — by which point the user has already experienced degraded performance.

802.11r: Fast BSS Transition

802.11r (Fast BSS Transition, often called FT) reduces the reassociation handshake from 50–200ms to under 50ms, often under 10ms. It achieves this by pre-authenticating the client with the target AP before the client has disconnected from the current AP, using cached security keys distributed through the AP infrastructure. The client can switch APs without a full re-authentication, which is what causes most of the roaming delay.

For VoIP calls on WiFi, 802.11r is the difference between a call surviving a room-to-corridor transition and the call dropping. Huawei eKit APs support 802.11r and it can be enabled per-SSID through the eKit app.

BSS Transition Management: Nudging Sticky Clients

BSS Transition Management (802.11v) allows the AP to send a roaming recommendation to a client when the client's signal drops below a threshold and a better AP is available. The recommendation includes the MAC address and channel of the preferred target AP. Well-implemented clients (modern iOS, Android, and Windows devices) will act on this recommendation. Older devices may ignore it, in which case the AP's last resort is a de-authentication frame.

Configure a Minimum RSSI Threshold in the eKit app — typically -70 to -75 dBm. When a client's RSSI from the current AP drops below this threshold, the AP sends a BSS Transition Request and, if the client does not roam within a defined timeout, issues a de-authentication. This forces even sticky clients to roam.

Same SSID Across All APs: The Foundation

Seamless roaming requires the same SSID name and the same security credentials (same WPA3 passphrase or 802.1X authentication server) on every AP. Clients discover that two APs share the same SSID from the same Extended Service Set (ESS) by comparing the BSSID and ESSID in beacon frames. If you accidentally configure different passphrases on different APs, clients cannot roam between them.

For larger UAE deployments (50+ APs), the Huawei eKit AC (wireless access controller) provides centralised radio frequency management that improves roaming beyond what per-AP intelligence can achieve. The AC collects real-time RSSI data from all APs and all clients, enabling it to:

  • Identify when a client is near the boundary between two APs
  • Send coordinated BSS Transition Requests with accurate target AP information
  • Manage transmit power per AP to create defined coverage cells with clean boundaries
  • Balance client load across APs — steering new associations to less-loaded APs
  • Provide per-client roaming history for troubleshooting dropped connections

Hotel Corridor Roaming

A UAE hotel guest checking out walks from room 312 to the lift lobby to the ground-floor restaurant — a path that passes three or four AP coverage zones. Without fast roaming, a VoIP call to a taxi service may drop at each AP boundary. With 802.11r and a minimum RSSI policy of -72 dBm enforced by the eKit AC, the call transitions through each AP in under 20ms — imperceptible to the caller.
