Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) means a network device — a switch, an access point, or a gateway — self-configures when connected to power and network, without a technician manually entering commands. Huawei eKit's implementation of ZTP is one of the most straightforward in the SME networking market: plug in the device, open the eKit app on your phone, scan the QR code on the device, and it is provisioned. The entire process takes under five minutes.

What ZTP Solves for UAE Businesses

Traditionally, deploying a managed switch or enterprise AP required an IT professional to:

  • Connect via console cable or web browser to the device's management interface
  • Enter CLI commands or navigate a complex web GUI to configure VLANs, PoE, management IP, and protocols
  • Repeat this process for every device — time-consuming and error-prone
  • Travel to the site if the device is in a remote location

How eKit's Auto-Discovery Works

When a new eKit device is connected to a network that already has an eKit Gateway (the network's uplink device that manages cloud communication), it broadcasts a discovery message. The eKit Gateway identifies the new device, registers it with the eKit cloud, and the cloud notifies the eKit app owner that a new device is ready to provision.

If there is no eKit Gateway yet (first-time setup), the process starts with the gateway or router. Once the gateway is provisioned and online, it acts as the controller for all subsequent eKit devices added to that site.

Step-by-Step: First-Time Setup of a New Site

  • 1. Install the Huawei eKit app (Android or iOS) and create or sign into your Huawei account
  • 2. Create a new 'Site' in the app — name it after your location (e.g., 'Dubai Office Floor 3')
  • 3. Connect your eKit Gateway/Router to your ISP uplink and power on
  • 4. In the app, tap 'Add Device' and scan the QR code on the Gateway — it is discovered automatically
  • 5. Follow the guided setup: enter your ISP settings (PPPoE or DHCP), set the WiFi SSID and password
  • 6. The Gateway is provisioned — the site is now active with basic internet access
  • 7. Connect your eKit Switch to the Gateway via Ethernet and power on
  • 8. In the app, tap 'Add Device' and scan the Switch's QR code — it appears in the site topology
  • 9. Connect your eKit APs to the Switch (PoE powers the APs automatically)
  • 10. In the app, scan each AP's QR code — they are discovered and your SSID configuration is pushed to them

The entire setup for a small office with a gateway, one switch, and four APs takes approximately 30–45 minutes including cabling. An equivalent deployment on a traditional enterprise platform would require 2–4 hours of CLI configuration by a qualified engineer.

Adding a Device to an Existing Network

Adding a new AP or switch to an already-running eKit network is even simpler:

  • Connect the new device to power and Ethernet
  • Open the eKit app on your phone
  • Tap 'Add Device' in the relevant Site
  • Scan the QR code on the device
  • Name the device (optional but recommended for identification)
  • The existing site configuration — SSID, VLANs, management settings — is pushed to the new device automatically

For a hotel adding three new AP362E units to a newly refurbished floor, this means the hotel's IT contact can add the APs from their phone in the morning — no site visit required from the network installer if the cabling is already in place.

Benefits for UAE Businesses Without In-House IT

Most UAE SMEs — boutique hotels, clinics, retail branches, small construction companies — do not have an in-house network engineer.
